Bonnie and Stewart Krentzman joined many other couples recently as they celebrated their love which had its beginnings at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU). The annual event, held at Hennessey Hall at the FDU College of Florham in Madison, drew nearly one hundred FDU alumni who met and fell in love while students at the University.

“We can identify at least 1,000 couples who fell in love while attending FDU,” said Okang McBride, the University’s Director of Alumni Relations. “They came here to get an excellent education and they obtained an additional benefit – someone to love and cherish for the rest of their lives.”

WAMFEST at FDU

MADISON, NJ (April 16, 2010) Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Creative Writing Program kicks off WAMFEST 2010: Words and Music Festival, its annual series of readings, interviews, talks and performances, on May 3 at the College at Florham. The festival showcases top literary and music talents including Bruce Springsteen and former US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, members of the legendary punk band X, Pulitzer Prize winning poet Paul Muldoon, and more -- in ways audiences have never seen them before.

WAMFEST is an annual series hosted by FDU’s Becton College and the Creative Writing Programs. WAMFEST is designed to celebrate the literary quality of popular music and to break down the barriers between the community and academia. It bridges the gap between the literature in universities and the literature of the people. Past guests have included Rosanne Cash, John Wesley Harding, and David Gates.

“The whole idea of WAMFEST is to allow students to have an intimate experience with people who are not generally available in that way,” said David Daniel, WAMFEST originator and professor of creative writing. “By bringing together writers — poets, novelists, journalists — and songwriters and starting a conversation, I hope that the festival creates a forum that bridges the gap between ‘the people’s art’ and the ‘art of the academy,’ and that WAMFEST provides a model for teaching and celebrating the arts across the country.”

WAMFEST artist in residence and host from the beginning John Wesley Harding is back to moderate these engaging presentations.  Harding is a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter and novelist. He has released fifteen music albums, ranging in style from folk to pop. Performing under his stage name of John Wesley Harding, he has also written two novels with a third due out this year under his real name, Wesley Stace.

Muldoon and Harding will perform songs they've written for Wamfest, discuss the process, answer questions, and Muldoon will read poems.

ROBERT PINSKY & BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
JERSEY RAIN: Bruce Springsteen and Robert Pinsky in Conversation and Performance with John Wesley Harding
Former US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky was born in the same hospital as Bruce Springsteen, and from Monmouth Memorial, these two have reached the pinnacle of their respective fields.   Robert’s classic book of poems, Jersey Rain, was said to remind the world that “poetry is a tool for living”, and his astonishing career as a poet and essayist has done more than any other poet to promote and exemplify how poetry is relevant in all our lives.   Likewise, Bruce’s astonishing lyrics reveal the “poetry” that may be discovered at the heart of American life, the stories that bind us all together--and both of these great artists have shown us the art and beauty and dignity and truth that may be mined from those stories, those ordinary lives led in sunlight or in Jersey rain.
John Wesley Harding will lead this engaging discussion that is sure to be a unique experience for everyone in attendance.
Program Note:  THIS IS NOT A BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN CONCERT!   It will be a conversation with a few songs and a few poems. The program will be followed by a brief question and answer period.

Founder of SwitchFlop to Deliver 2010 Female Entrepreneur Lecture

Madison, NJ (March 10, 2010) — Lindsay Phillips, the energetic inspiration and founding force behind her namesake company and the now-famous SwitchFlop, will deliver the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurship’s 2010 Female Entrepreneur Lecture at Fairleigh Dickinson University. The lecture, entitled “Why Didn’t I Think of That (My Business Story)?” will take place on Friday, March 26 at 6 p.m.

Phillips’s footwear concept evolved from a high school art project—ceramic flip flops. Amazed by the positive response to her artwork and by people’s disappointment that it could not be worn, Lindsay began designing functional flops with colorful straps, each adorned by a unique button. Her idea evolved when she realized that by using hook-and-loop fasteners she could create one shoe with many straps leading to unlimited choices with minimal effort. This simple, yet brilliant innovation was the birth of SwitchFlop. Lindsay applied for a patent on her idea before she graduated high school.

During her college years Lindsay perfected her interchangeable design. Her travels to Europe for classes and her voyage around the world on the Semester at Sea exposed her to a kaleidoscope of cultures, colors, and patterns that would influence her strap designs. Lindsay honed her design, merchandising and manufacturing skills working summers at Polo Ralph Lauren's leather goods division in New York City. After her patent was granted in 2004, she joined forces with her mother, Liz, to start her business and find a manufacturer. SwitchFlop made its retail debut in January 2007 at the Surf Expo Trade Show in Orlando where it was showcased as a new and innovative product. Orders started rolling in and explosive growth followed.

With the amazing variety of SwitchFlops' strap designs and sandals, Lindsay's dream of changing from beach casual to a formal affair in a matter of seconds was realized. She was recently named by the Star-Ledger as one of the Top 10 Business People to Watch.

The lecture continues a strong annual tradition of influential Female Entrepreneur Lecturers at the Rothman Institute. Previous speakers include Ranjini Poddar, Co-Founder and President of Artech Information Systems LLC, Lillian Rodríguez López, president of the Hispanic Federation, Ann Limberg, President, Bank of America New Jersey; Doris Drucker, who started a national manufacturing company from scratch at the age of 82; Peg Brady, Executive Director of Medical Missions for Children; and Diahann Lassus, CFP and CPA, co-founder and president of Lassus Wherley & Associates, P.C.

The annual lecture is part of the Female Entrepreneurs’ Alliance, which was founded to educate and support women business owners. It will be held in conjunction with the awards ceremony for the 2010 New Jersey Business Idea Competition, a program designed to nurture an entrepreneurial mindset among high school students.

The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. and the lecture by Lindsay Phillips will start at 7:15 p.m. in Hennessy Hall (the Mansion), on FDU’s College at Florham. It is free and open to the public; due to limited seating, registration is required by March 22. For more information, call 973 443 8842 or visit http://www.fdu.edu/rothman.

“I have chosen this material,” said Stacie Lents, an assistant professor of theater and the director of this show, “as representative of the contributions African-American writers have made to the landscape of contemporary American theater and acting in this country. This production really celebrates the diversity in the theater program and the college.”

This performance will also be the first performance in the newly improved Barn Theater. The Barn Theater was renovated as part of a $100,000 grant from the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation.

Fairleigh Dickinson’s Becton College of Arts of Sciences and the Theater Program present this Black History Month performance.

The opportunity to view this performance is free and open to the public. The play  will be held in the Barn Theater. Fairleigh Dickinson is located at 285 Madison Avenue, Madison, N.J.
